November is an exciting time for those high school seniors (or junior college athletes) who have been recruited by an NCAA Division I or II athletic program and have been offered an athletic scholarship to continue participating in their sport in college.
These athletes will have an opportunity to sign a National Letter of Intent with an NCAA Division I or II institution during the early signing period that begins on Wednesday, November 11. The signing period continues through Wednesday, November 18 and is available for athletes in most sports.
High school football seniors will not sign a National Letter of Intent until February 3, 2010. Other sports that do not sign until February 3 are cross country, track and field, soccer, field hockey and water polo.

Hello Sir,
I signed an athletic scholarship agreement with an ncaa 2 school, however I have offers from some naia schools as well. My question is that can I still being talking with those schools even if I have already signed with one? I have to go through the eligibility center and It is not 100% chance that I will be eligible to compete for a ncaa 2 school. I do not want to lose one year of competion as a red shirt.
Thank you
Kris
Hi Kris! Because the NCAA and the NAIA are two separate organizations, you can still talk with NAIA schools even though you’ve signed with an NCAA Division II school. Keep in mind that the NAIA now has their own Eligibility Center that just started operating this year, so you’ll have to be registered with and certified by an Eligibility Center, now matter whether you go NCAA or NAIA. I recommend you compare the eligibility requirements of NCAA Div. II with NAIA and see how your academic credentials stack up. Good luck!
Rick,
When is the earliest a NAIA Cross Country Recruit (she will be a freshmen fall of 2012) can sign a NLI?
Thanks,
Mike
Hi Mike,
The NAIA doesn’t have specific signing periods for prospects. That may change in the next year or so, now that the NAIA has implemented their own Eligibility Center much like the NCAA, but for now there are no specific periods.
Rick
Rick,
When is the last official day that a 2011 grad can sign for college baseball?
Thanks,
Connie
Hi Connie,
The last day that a 2011 grad can sign a National Letter of Intent with an NCAA Division I or II school is August 1. It will still be possible to sign a financial aid agreement with a Div. I or II program after August 1, but it will not be accompanied by a National Letter of Intent.
Rick
if you sign a nli for a division 2 school can you resign with a division 1 after?
Hi Josh,
If you sign a National Letter of Intent with an NCAA Division II school, you won’t be able to sign an NLI with a Division I school later, unless you go to Junior College in-between and sign with a Division I as you are completing your junior college enrollment.
Rick
Hi Rick,
Do most Div I and Div II schools attempt and prefer to get their top prospects signed at the early signing period (golf in particular-which has a November early signing) or do they like to wait until their prospects have participated in their senior season then sign.
Thanks,
LeAnn
Hi LeAnn,
Almost all schools will try to get their top prospects signed in the November signing period if the prospects are ready to sign. Most coaches like to have their recruiting for this class completed, or near completed, with the November signings. This also allows the prospects to get that out of the way and “relax” a bit with one less thing to stress over in their senior year.
Rick
If you sign an NLI to a Division 1 school for baseball, can you not go to that school and go to a junior college instead even though you signed an NLI?
Hi Rob,
Yes, you can go to a junior college even though you signed an NLI with a Division I school. Keep in mind, however, that unless you graduate from the junior college, the original NLI that you signed with the Division I program will still be binding upon you unless that school grants you a full and complete release from the NLI.
Good luck,
Rick
Rick,
If you sign a NLT with a divison 1 college in basketball and was declared ineligible, what are your options? If you go to junior college are you still bound to the division 1 college after you graduate in two years.
Hi Alex,
I’m not clear on whether you were declared ineligible after enrolling at and attending the Div. I college, or if you were declared ineligible prior to enrollment and never attended classes there. Send me a direct e-mail at rick@informedathlete.com.
Rick
This is not about a division 1 2 or 3 schools but a community college and I was hoping you could help me out. If i signed letter of intent for a community college but decided I wanted to go to a different community college how would I go about doing this?
Hi Ashley,
You will have to get an NJCAA Release Agreement signed by the President and Athletic Director of the college you originally signed with if you want to be eligible at the next community college.
Good luck!
Rick
